Beach hair never goes out of style. That’s why GQ‘s Best Stuff went looking for the most reliable sea salt sprays out there.
The best way to get beach hair is to take a dip in the ocean. Of course.
The next best way is to use a sea salt spray. And, no, they aren’t bottling ocean water, which would be the perfect scam. When the extracted salts settle into your hair, they soak up excess grease and give everything a little lift. They add separation and texture—that is, they give your hair lots of depth and layers, so that it looks like you’re some chill surfer who spent the day on the waves. But now you can recreate that look anytime you want, even if you’re stuck in a sweltering urban labyrinth or a frigid suburban wasteland.
My colleagues and I have tried dozens of the most highly regarded sea salt sprays, and these are the ones that gave us the best beach-like effects.
I keep this blue juice stocked up, and have ever since I first tested it 5 years ago. I find it’s the most versatile spray—add it to dry hair for extra texture and body (“artfully disheveled” as it’s been called). Add it to towel dried hair for a more stylized finish, with all the volume and grip, plus a pinch of movement. I find my hair gets a very subtle shine when I apply it damp, too—not like a polished pomade look, but just enough to catch the eye. It makes the hair look healthy, and as lively as all that volume and texture would imply.
